The People Deserve Better

The people deserve better

For too long we have endured Microsoft wielding its corporate might around and shoving proprietary vendor locked software down everyone's throat. It is time to start a new chapter. A new digital frontier.

The current state and what's wrong with it

At the time of writing the most widely used graphics API is DirectX11 and DirectX12. It's essentially the pipeline that allows developers to bring graphics from their engine to your screen over your hardware. These "pipelines" or graphics API's come in a few flavours. And unfortunately the most widely used one happens to be the most grimy flavour of them all; Microsoft flavour.

It's locked down to the Windows platform and doesn't care for anything else. At its core it aims to simplify the usage of graphic API's for developers and giving them a streamlined experience to deploy their needs on the Windows platform. That's where the positives stop.

The DirectX12 API is extremely bloated, with a bunch of bells and whistles, and your PC is the unfortune bearer of that bloat, hindering it from reaching its full potential.

It's closed off and shuts the door for any alternatives. Especially in light of Microsoft's recent decision to end support for Windows 10 in combination with their strict requirements for upgrading to Windows 11. A good chunk of people have chosen to migrate to Linux instead of having to buy an entirely new computer just to upgrade to Windows 11. The twist is that DirectX does not run natively on Linux. By developing games using DirectX12, developers are essentially excluding a big part of the gaming community for short term benefits.

Enter Vulkan; the people's API

As the Linux community (and other open platforms) grow, albeit slow but steadily, there is an ever increasing need for a graphics API that can natively run on almost any system. Vulkan has been around since 2016 and is known for being extremely efficient, capable of running natively on almost any PC and mobile device.

A free and open future

Now is our time to unite against the corporate overlords, namely "Microsoft" and their monopolistic business practices. By developing games using Vulkan, we can break free from the chains of vendor lock-in and create a more inclusive gaming ecosystem.
